The microphones also fall into two categories by directivity; non-directional microphones to pick up sounds from all directions and unidirectional microphones designed to collect sounds form a specific direction.
A unidirectional microphone with super sharp directivity, in particular, is also known as gun microphone, which collects target sounds with pinpoint accuracy.
