How far will the Line Array Speaker effect extend?

The Line Array speakers have been installed in many reverberant places to increase the speech intelligibility.
Because they have big features for improving the sound quality.
However, those features have physical limitations of the effect.
Below easily describes the advantage and extent of effect.

  • Controlled dispersion minimizes reflected sounds from ceilings and walls.
  • Acoustic feedback is suppressed.
  • Clear sound reaches the remote target area.

Line array speaker can provide high quality sound (conventional speakers fail to do) through space in poor acoustic condition (gymnasium, auditorium, arena, church, etc.).
However, vertical directivity control of line array speaker has limited extent and ideal line array effect will reduce at a certain distance where its characteristics become identical with those of point source speaker.
See “Critical distance”described below.

The feature of line array speaker i.e. line source, is not to disperse sound in vertical direction. This directivity is maintained within the limited area, beyond which the sound propagates spreading vertically and horizontally, in the same way as the sound from the point source speaker travels.
The critical distance of the line source can be determined based on the length of the line source and frequency, as expressed in the formula below.

The area where the line array speaker can implement the directivity control is determined by the length of line source provided that the frequency is kept constant.
To determine the critical distance of line source, insert the speaker length and frequency into the following formula.
The area over which clear sound is to be delivered is defined by location and condition of the field.
When the number of line array speakers and their lengths are determined to cover critical distance, ideal sound field can be established.
