When ears of rice turn golden and red dragonflies appear in flight, it's time for families producing fine noodles at Shingu-cho to air half-finished noodles in the sun.

These historical remains recall the atmosphere of the town's past days. The highway leads to Inaba in Tottori Prefecture, a place referred to in Japan's oldest chronicle "Kojiki." It seems that since ancient times, the highway had been used to transport a variety of products and cultures.

The town has two contrasting aspects: one is that of an agricultural community and the other is that of an advanced research center.

When you pass through the town's pastoral area at the mountain skirts, which is now in the autumn harvesting season, and then proceed west to reach an elevated ground, you will find another face of the town: the Harima Science Garden City, which is the core facility of Nishi-Harima Technopolis.

With the 8 Giga-electron-volt Synchrotron Radiation Facility, the world's largest of its kind, this modern area is a base for scientific research and education for future generations.

The town is also famous for somen, or fine noodles, called "Ibo-no-ito" (thread of Ibo).
This somen is made by pulling a kneaded dough out into thin long strings by hand.

About one hundred families in the town are engaged in the production of handmade somen.

Experienced workers are said to begin their work day around 2 o'clock or 3 in the early morning. They say the music coming from the Multi Point Music Distribution System at 7 a.m. everyday signals them that it's time for breakfast: time for them to take a rest from their hard early morning work.

The system broadcasts a wide range of information closely connected to local residents' daily lives, from farming and weather information to warnings for disaster prevention, and addresses for encouraging voting. In this way, the system is integral to the local community as a medium reaching about 70 percent of the town's 17,000 residents.

When the evening dusk is gathering in the town, again you hear the tune "Furusato."

Tracing back to the source of the music, you will find a modern speaker installed next to the fire bell on the classic fire-lookout tower which is standing high above the tiled roofs of country houses. This funny combination may make you smile.

The music feels as if it were reminding children playing outdoors to go home and do their homework or help with the evening tasks.
The sound from the speakers gives a rhythm to country life.
